Caption: Desmidium algae. Light micrograph, using phase contrast, of a living filament of Desmidium sp., a unicellular green alga. Each cell in this filament is comprised of two half-cells delineated by a narrow fissure or constriction known as a sinus. The narrow connection between the two half-cells is known as the isthmus. The alga obtains its nourishment by converting sunlight into food using photosynthesis. Phase contrast images reduce the colour saturation of images whilst allowing greater detail to be seen. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
