Caption: Oedogonium alga. Light micrograph of the green alga Oedogonium oedogonium. This alga is found in fresh water ponds, ditches and water tanks. It is composed of long, unbranched filaments with walls between individual cells (transverse lines). Each cell possesses an elaborate chloroplast (green) which is the site of photosynthetic conversion of sunlight into energy. The filaments are attached when young but become free- floating (as seen here). Oospores (rounded) are produced sexually under certain conditions. Fragmentation and asexual reproduction also occurs. Magnification: x30 at 35mm size.
