Caption: Euastrum oblongum. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the freshwater alga Euastrum oblongum, a desmid. Desmids are known for the convoluted appearance of their inner cellulose wall. The term desmid is applied to a group of genera of green algae that show great morphological variety but are related by common features of cell structure and method of reproduction. Most desmids consist of two distinct halves joined at the centre by a thin process known as the isthmus (centre). Magnification: x430 at 5x7cm size. x1125 at 5x7"
