Caption: Euastrum oblongum. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the desmid, Euastrum oblongum. Desmids are microscopic freshwater green algae whose variously-shaped cell walls have pores, as seen here. Most desmids consist of two distinct halves joined by a narrow constriction or isthmus (at centre). Cells may be solitary, or joined in colonies. The term desmid is applied to a group of genera of green algae that show great variety in shape but are related by common features of cell structure and method of reproduction.
