Caption: RHIC collider. View of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, New York. RHIC consists of two rings of 1740 superconducting magnets which guide beams of heavy ions - heavy atoms, such as gold, which have been stripped of electrons - in opposite directions before bringing them into collision. The tunnel housing the RHIC is 2.4 miles long. The photo shows one of the magnet rings; the other is behind it. The superconducting magnets are housed in the continuous pipe-like vacuum flask, the cryostat, which is filled with liquid helium to keep them at their low operating temperature.
