Caption: Algal colony. Coloured light micrograph (LM) of a colony of the green alga Schizochlamys gelatinosa. The cells contain chloroplasts, giving them their green colour. They are held together in the colony by a gelatinous substance, hence their name. This free-floating algal colony lives in fresh, usually warm, shallow water such as found in lakes. Magnification: x80 at 35mm size.
