Caption: Double-slit experiment. Interference patterns observed in a modern-day replica of Thomas Young's double-slit experiment. A coherent beam from a red Helium-Neon laser (632.8 nm) is used to illuminate two closely-spaced 25-micron-wide slits (double-slit). Two double-slits with separations between the individual slits of 75 micron and 58 micron are used. The resulting diffraction patterns are observed at the same distance from the double-slits. The fringe spacing is smaller for the 75 micron slit separation (top panel) than it is for the 58 micron slit separation (bottom panel). This is a classic demonstration of the wave nature of the light.
