Caption: Laser beam split by a diffraction grating.Diffraction grating is an optical element whose properties are periodically modulated in one dimension. Light transmission through a diffraction grating occurs along discrete directions, called diffraction orders. Here a red Helium-Neon laser (632.8 nm) and two gratings with different groove density (50 and 25 lines/mm) are used to observe the resulting diffraction patterns. The spacing between diffraction orders is larger for the 50 lines/mm grating (top panel) compared to the 25 lines/mm grating (bottom panel).
