Caption: Laser beam split by a diffraction grating, Photo 2 of 3. Diffraction grating is an optical element whose properties are periodically modulated in one dimension. Light transmission through a diffraction grating occurs along discrete directions, called diffraction orders. In this series two gratings with different groove density (50 and 25 lines/mm) and two Helium-Neon lasers, red (632.8 nm) and green (543.4 nm), are used to observe the resulting diffraction patterns. Photo 1 and Photo 2 use different lasers but the same 50 lines/mm grating. Note that the spacing between diffraction orders is smaller for shorter (green) wavelength.
