Caption: Spirogyra alga. Light micrograph of a filament from a Spirogyra sp. alga, showing its spiralling bands of chloroplasts (green). Chloroplasts are the site of photosynthesis, the process of obtaining energy from sunlight. Spirogyra is a common freshwater alga. In favourable conditions it can grow rapidly, forming blooms that deprive other aquatic life of nutrients. Magnification: x650 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
