Caption: Tropical plants and reptiles. Historical artwork of reptiles and tropical plants on the banks of the Orinoco River. This is a major river in northern South America, flowing through dense rainforests and swamps in Venezuela and Colombia, and into the Atlantic Ocean. The reptiles include crocodiles (lower centre), snakes (centre right), turtles (background), and lizards such as iguanas (bottom left). Four species of crocodile are found in the Americas, with the Orinoco crocodile found here. Caiman, also found in South America, are smaller than crocodiles. Artwork from the second volume (second period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
