Caption: Oxford heliometer. This instrument was housed at the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford, England. It was built in around 1848 and is a 7.5-inch telescope made by the German instrument makers Repsold, with optics from the German instrument makers Merz. It was used to measure the parallax of nearby stars. Diagram from 'Handbook of Descriptive and Practical Astronomy' (George Frederick Chambers, 1890 fourth edition).
