Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Cyclotella meneghiniana, a diatom found in the brackish water of saline or polluted streams & lakes. Diatoms are a type of alga. They consist of two valves, made of silica, which fit together like the top & bottom of a box. The valves are often decorated with tiny pores, ridges, spikes or other projections. This SEM shows clearly the surface of one valve & the broad "girdle" connecting it to the other valve. Magnification: x1785 at 6x6cm size. JBU colouring: green & yellow. BW original is B305/17M.
