Caption: Soviet spaceflight heroes. Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov (1935-2000, centre), Soviet rocket engineer Sergei Korolev (1907-1966, left) and Soviet physicist and mathematician Mstislav Keldysh (1911-1978, right). Titov was the second person to orbit the Earth, in the Vostok 2 spacecraft on 6 August 1961. Korolev, who was the head engineer for the Soviet space programme, was known as 'the Chief Designer'. Keldysh worked on Soviet missiles and space travel and was called 'the Chief Theoretician'. He was elected as Chairman of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1961, serving until 1975. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in June 1963.
