Caption: Natalia Petrovna Bekhtereva (1924-2008), Soviet neuroscientist, neurophysiologist and psychologist. Bekhtereva became Director of the Soviet Institute for Experimental Medicine from 1970 to 1990. She was elected to the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1981. Her awards include the American Society for Cybernetics' Wiener Medal (1972) and the USSR State Prize (1985). She was the grand-daughter of Russian psychologist and neurophysiologist Vladimir Bekhterev, who was executed on Stalin's orders in 1927. She was then orphaned by the execution of her father during the Great Purge of 1938. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 1966.
