Caption: Ivan Mikhailovich Gubkin (1871-1939), Russian-Soviet geologist, working at a desk. Gubkin was a founding father of Soviet research on petroleum geology. He published 'The Study of Oil' (1932) on the principles of the origins of oil and its discovery. He also edited the journal 'Problems of Soviet Geology'. He was elected to the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1929, receiving the Order of Lenin that same year. Gubkin served as president of the 1937 International Geological Congress, and The Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas (founded in 1930) is named in his honour. This image dates from 1930.
