Caption: Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin (seated at left, 1855-1935), Russian botanist, examining fruit with his assistant in a garden. Michurin's work involved the deliberate crossing of various cultivars of a plant to try to breed in (select) various traits. This work was aimed at producing crops with good productivity matched with disease resistance and climate tolerance for various locations. Michurin was responsible for over 300 varieties of soft fruit plants. He was a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and also the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VASKhNIL). Photographed in Russia on 16 September 1932.
