Caption: Georgy Stepanovich Pisarenko (1910-2001, centre), Soviet engineer, talking in front of a blackboard with postgraduate students. Pisarenko was director of the Institute of Strength Problems at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kiev from 1966 to 1988, during which time the Institute and his students gained an international reputation for excellence. The Institute was renamed in his honour. His speciality was the strength of structures under extreme conditions, and he founded a journal on this topic in 1969 (currently titled 'Issues of Strength'). He was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1982. Photographed in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1983.
