Caption: Chelyuskin rescuers. The steamship Chelyuskin got stuck in the Arctic pack ice during a voyage of exploration and eventually sunk in early 1934. The crew had to abandon ship and be rescued by aircraft. These Soviet rescue pilots were the first to receive the award of Hero of the Soviet Union. From left: Sigizmund Aleksandrovich Levanevsky (1902-1937), Vasily Sergeyevich Molokov (1895-1982), Mavriky Trofimovich Slepnyov (1896-1965), Nikolai Petrovich Kamanin (1908-1982, later director of cosmonaut training), Mikhail Vasilyevich Vodopyanov (1899-1980), Anatoly Vasilyevich Lyapidevsky (1908-1983), and Ivan Vasilyevich Doronin (1903-1951).
