Caption: Nikolai Gennadiyevich Basov (1922-2001), Soviet physicist. Basov is primarily known for his work with Aleksandr Prokhorov on developing masers (amplified beams of microwaves) and applying this to light to produce lasers (amplified beams of light). This work earned him the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics, jointly with Prokhorov and Townes. Basov was a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (corresponding member in 1962; full member in 1966), and Director of the Lebedev Physics Institute (1973-1988). His awards include Hero of Socialist Labour, the Lenin Prize and the USSR State Prize. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 1985.
