Caption: Boris Ivanovich Stepanov (1913-1987, centre), Soviet physicist, in a laboratory with students. Stepanov worked on subjects such as spectroscopy, holography and quantum electronics. He was Director of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR from 1957 to 1985, and spent most of his career there, building up the Belorusian school of physics. He was awarded the USSR State Prize three times (1950, 1972, 1982), as well as Hero of Socialist Labour (1973) and the Order of the October Revolution (1971). Photographed at the Institute of Physics where he was Director, in Minsk, Belarus, in 1979.
