Caption: Early pyrheliometer. This is a type of radiometer, used to measure the amount of solar radiation at a particular location. The sunlight falls on a thermopile that converts the heat to an electrical signal that varies depending on the amount of sunlight. The data gathered is used by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed in the UK.
