Caption: Visibility recorder, also called a nephelometer. This device uses a beam of light and a light detector to measure the amount of particles suspended in a gas or liquid, in this case in the atmosphere. This allows a measure to be obtained of the degree of visibility, and how much it is reduced by meteorological phenomena such as fog, pollution, or a combination such as smog. The data gathered here is used by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed in the UK.

Release details: Model release not required. Property release not required.
