Caption: Global biosphere. Coloured satellite image of Earth's biosphere, centered on the North Atlantic Ocean, showing the distribution of vegetation on land and marine phytoplankton. The colours represent chlorophyll densities: from red (most dense) through yellow & blue to pink (least dense) in the oceans; and from dark green to pale yellow on land. The ocean data was acquired over 1978-86 by the Coastal Zone Colour Scanner (CZCS) on NASA's Nimbus-7 research satellite. The land data was collected over 1982-85 by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the NOAA-7 weather satellite.
