Caption: The heat of the Earth. Colour-coded infrared view of the Earth made by a Meteosat weather satellite. This image was made at 03.30 hrs GMT. The colours represent temperature, from blue (coldest) to red (warmest). Blue features are tops of large cloud banks. Lower, and thus warmer, clouds are shown in yellow and pink, particularly across the centre of the frame. Red areas are generally seas and oceans seen through breaks in the cloud. Land areas, such as the Sahara Desert and North Africa (yellow/green above centre), are often cooler than surrounding seas during the night due to radiative heat loss.
