Caption: Earthrise. Artist's impression of a crescent Earth viewed from space. The crescent is due to the Earth's shadow and marks the boundary between night and day. The velocity of the boundary as the Earth rotates depends upon the distance from the equator. At the equator it moves at approximately 1600 kilometres per hour (1000 miles per hour); at a latitude of 45 degrees it moves at about 1073 kilometres per hour (667 miles per hour). This difference is because the circumference of the Earth is different at different latitudes. The Earth rotates once every 23 hours 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds.
