Caption: Diatoms. Light micrograph of the single-celled, microscopic algae called diatoms. The two main morphological types are represented here; pennate (rod shaped) and centric (round). The cell wall, or frustule, is made of silica and pectin and is intricately patterned. It consists of two halves which fit together in the manner of a box. Diatoms are found in both fresh and salt water environments and also in soil. They are of great importance to food chains. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
