Caption: Earth and Moon. Computer composite image of the Earth and Moon. The bodies are not to scale. At upper right is the African continent on Earth, while the Moon is presenting several dark maria, or seas. These areas are not so abundantly cratered as the lighter areas, indicating they were created relatively recently in the Moon's history, probably by volcanic activity. The craters were largely formed in the early years of the Solar System by the constant bombardment of meteorites. The Moon is relatively large for a satellite, and orbits on average around 400,000 kilometres from Earth. It has a powerful effect on life on Earth, including governing the tides.
