Caption: Diatoms. Light micrograph of an assortment of single-celled, microscopic algae called diatoms. There are about 10, 000 species of diatoms. The two main morphological types are represented here: pennate (rod-shaped) and centric (round). The cell wall, or frustule, is made up of silica and pectin and is often intricately patterned or decorated with rows of tiny holes (seen here). The frustule consists of two halves which fit together in the manner of a box. Diatoms occur in both fresh and salt water environments where they form a large part of the plankton. They are thus an important link in the food chain. Darkfield illumination. Magnification: x33 at 35mm size.
