Caption: Worldwide vegetation map, based on satellite data obtained between 1997 and 2004. Rather than use a uniform green to indicate vegetation, the natural vegetation colours are used. This provides greater discrimination between arid and wetter areas. The deserts range from bright yellow to a dull brown. Vegetation ranges from dark green forests and tundra in the north, to a brighter green for temperate forests and tropical rainforests. Snow and ice is blue/white, and water is blue. The map does not include the far northern and southern polar regions. The data were obtained from SPOT Earth observation satellites.
