Caption: Diatoms. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a group of Tabellaria sp. diatoms (centre) forming a star-shaped structure. Two rod-like Melosira sp. diatoms are also seen at upper right. Diatoms are single-celled algae. They have an intricately patterned cell wall, or frustule, made of silica and pectin. The wall is in two halves which fit together. Diatoms can be elongated (as here), spherical or circular. They are found in both marine and freshwater, and are a major constituent of plankton. As such, they are of great importance to the food chains in their environment. Magnification: x1370 at 6.5x9.5 inch size.
