Caption: Map of Scotland, 1583. Copied by Nicolas de Nicolay (1517-1583) from a map produced by Alexander Lyndsay in the first half of the 16th century, this chart was the most accurate of its time: far more so than any for the next 150 years. It is primarily a coastal map and Nicolay copied it for the French king, who used it in his attempts to support the Scottish succession. It names all the capes, firths and ports but neglects inland, merely giving the details of 20 regions.
