Caption: Asia at night from space. Colour-coded satellite image of Asia at night. North is at top. In this image city lights appear yellow, gas flares from oil produc- tion areas are red, burning vegetation is purple and light from squid- fishing fleets is light green. Most of the light comes from the continent's cities. Deserts and mountainous areas are largely uninhabited. The squid fishing fleets use the light to attract the squid. The data for this picture was produced as a mosaic of images from the American Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft.
