Caption: Africa at night from space. Colour-coded image of Africa at night. North is at top. The Middle East (upper right) and southern Europe (top centre) are also seen. In this image city lights appear yellow, flares from oil production areas are red, & burning vegetation is purple. Africa is not as densely populated as Europe. Oil is produced mainly in north Africa and the Middle East. Forested parts of Africa are being burnt to clear land for agriculture. Data for this picture was came from the American Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) spacecraft.
