Caption: Cosmic rays research. The building housing the EAS-TOP (Extensive Air Showers) experiment on the Gran Sasso massif, Italy, at an altitude of 2017 metres. Cosmic rays are composed of highly energetic particles such as protons, photons and light nuclei which continuously hit the Earth from outer space. As they interact with the atoms in the upper atmosphere they produce showers of secondary particles, such as electrons, positrons, neutrinos and muons, with lower energies. EAS-TOP detectors examine both the primary cosmic rays and also the induced secondary showers.
