Caption: Japan, seen from space. The colours in this image have been processed to approximate to true colour. The main island of Japan (centre) is Honshu. At far left is the island of Kyushu, just to the right of which is the smaller island of Shikoku. The second largest island, Hokkaido, is near top right. Urban areas are shown as brown: the capital, Tokyo, is just right of centre on the south coast of Honshu. Most of the country is seen as tree-covered mountains (dark green), although some lowland plains are seen near the coasts (pale green). This image was constructed from a mosaic of frames made by a Landsat satellite.
