Caption: Diatoms. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of diatom algae (green) in seaweed (blue). Diatoms are planktonic unicellular algae that have silica in their cell walls (frustules). There are over 10,000 species of diatom algae, found in both marine and freshwater habitats. These diatoms were collected from the ocean. Diatom cell widths vary, but are generally less than 0.2 millimetres.
