Caption: Socotra Island. Satellite image of Socotra Island in the northwest Indian Ocean. North is at bottom left. Water is blue, land is brown and clouds are white. Socotra is located at the mouth of the Gulf of Aden, 340 kilometres (km) from mainland Yemen and 250km from the coast of Somalia. The 3600- km-square island is dominated by a limestone plateau, rising to the Haggier Mountains (upper left) at 1520 metres above sea level. Socotra supports a unique flora, including many endemic plants that are suited to the arid and semi-arid conditions. This image was taken by an astronaut in Earth orbit in February 2002.
