Caption: Satellite view of Scotland. Mosaic of Landsat images of Scotland, processed to give colours that approximate to natural tones. The bulk of Scotland in this view is the Highland region (centre), the valleys and ridges of its glaciated granite landscape being very evident. The dark green colour indicates coniferous forest cover, with paler green pastures in the valleys. Below this is Lowland Scotland with rougher, heath-type vegetation dominant. Just to the north of the mainland are the Orkney Islands, with the Shetlands at top right. At centre left are the Western Isles (Outer Hebrides). At bottom left is part of Ireland.
