Caption: Model of geomagnetic field reversal. First of three frames showing the magnetic field structure produced by a numerical simulation of the geodynamo, the source of the Earth's magnetic field. Here, the simulation has run for 31,000 'years', and is seen before a field reversal. The colours represent field lines with outward (yellow) and inward (blue) components. Geomagnetic field reversals are a feature in Earth's history, and are recorded in rocks near mid-ocean ridges. This image is from a paper published in 'Nature' in September 1995.
