Caption: Computer-generated map of the World, showing distribution of temperatures at the top of cloud layers. The upper map relates to January 1984, the lower to July 1984: both are mean values for each location over the whole month. The temperatures are colour-coded on a scale from 220 Kelvin (light blue) to 320 Kelvin (red). The temperature of the cloud top depends on the altitude that the cloud reaches and the temperature at that altitude. Of note are the warm tropical bands dissected by the equator. Cloud over continental land masses (except Eurasia) is generally cooler than oceanic cloud due to its being forced to higher altitudes.
