Caption: Greenhouse effect. Computer graphic image showing the earth from space enclosed in a cubic atmos- phere, and being overheated by the sun. In this depiction of the greenhouse effect (global warming), energy from the sun passes through the Earth's atmosphere to warm the land and oceans. However, build-up of gases from atmospheric pollution traps much of this solar radiation and prevents the heat from being re-radiated back into space. This leads to a gradual warming of the whole planet, known as the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases include the pollutants carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chloro- fluorocarbons.
