Caption: Ozone hole. Artwork showing the ozone layer cracked open and allowing sunlight through. The ozone layer (blue, around Earth) is a region of the Earth's upper atmosphere which contains ozone, a gas which absorbs ultraviolet light. Pollutants in the atmosphere, especially chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), react with the ozone and destroy it. This can form holes through which ultraviolet light can pass. Large doses of ultraviolet light have been shown to increase the risk of cancer on exposed skin. The discovery of ozone holes has led to a worldwide reduction in the numbers of CFCs used. They were formerly used as propellants and coolant gases.
