Caption: One of the first observations of a W particle. Electronic display of the results of a high-energy proton-antiproton collision in the UA1 detector at CERN in 1982-3. The white track (going from the centre towards bottom right & ending with a pink arrow) is due to a high-energy electron which, along with an invisible neutrino, carries energy equivalent to the mass of the short-lived W particle. The yellow tracks are other particles produced from the original proton- antiproton collision. The discovery of the W particle, one of the carrier particles of the weak nuclear force, was announced at CERN, the European particle physics lab near Geneva, in January 1983.
