Caption: Low-pressure weather system. Satellite image of low-pressure (cyclongenesis) off Australia's southern coast. North is at top, the Bass Strait at upper right. Land is brown, water is dark blue and clouds are white. These systems develop when a pressure difference between the core and its surroundings, combined with the Coriolis effect, causes air to circulate. The resulting swirling clouds are seen at centre, which rotate in a clockwise direction in the southern hemisphere. Low-pressure typically brings weather that is stormy and humid, which can increase in intensity to form a typhoon. Photographed by the OrbView-2 satellite on 20th February 2002.
