Caption: Cumulus cloud tower. The vertical development of a steep-sided tower in a cumulus cloud. This type of cloud has a typical "cotton wool" appearance, with rounded tops. Although cumulus cloud is classed as low-altitude (the flat base is usually only a few hundred metres from the ground) the top of this type of cloud may reach an altitude of up to 6km. The presence of cumulus cloud, particularly with tower formation, indicates strong convectional activity extending above condensation level, the height at which the cloud forms.
