Caption: Cirrus cloud. Wispy strands of cirrus cloud. Cirrus clouds are found at high altitudes, typically above 5000 metres. They consist of tiny ice crystals and are caused by the presence of moist air at high altitudes. If this air cools, some of the water vapour in it will condense out and freeze. The characteristically wispy shapes of the cirrus clouds are produced as these ice crystals are blown by strong winds. A bank of cirrus clouds may indicate an approaching weather front.
