Caption: Thunderstorm cloud forming. Aerial photograph from 10,000 metres of a developing cumulonimbus cloud, a large, turbulent cloud that carries rain or hail. The cloud is growing and forming the rising spikes seen, and will form a flattened anvil- shaped top as it hits a layer in the atmosphere known as the tropopause. The resulting structure, known as a hammerhead or thunderhead, is a clear sign of an impending thunderstorm.
