Caption: Light micrograph of a nitrogen fixing filamentous blue-green algae, Cylindrospermum sp. The micrograph shows chains of small vegetative cells, which contain chlorophyll & are involved in photosynthesis. The slightly larger cells with thick walls are heterocysts. These cells do not contain chlorophyll & are thought to be involved in the process of nitrogen fixation. The largest cells with granular contents are a type of resting spore called an akinete. Akinetes form during unfavourable conditions. They are tolerant of high temperatures, resist desiccation & easily germinate when favourable conditions return. Magnification x500 at 35mm size.
