Caption: An illustration from 1720 classifying different kinds of snowflake. Snow crystals all exhibit a regular shape based on the hexagonal crystal lattice. The perfect snow crystal is completely hexagonal, so the beautiful shapes more usually seen represent incomplete crystal growth. So varied are the irregularities possible that no two crystals are exactly the same.
